STADIUM KOMOTINI | 2003

The dynamic design of the track and field stadium.

The project involves the design of a track and field stadium along with its grand stands, the utility spaces underneath, the outdoor courts around the stadium, the parking area and the landscape.
The lack of sufficient surrounding space around the stadium was a key factor in choosing the grandstands coverage system, since any type of suspended system was not feasible.
Consequently, the coverage’s structural system is based on the grandstands load bearing frame and consists of gently curved full-length steel elements. The design is influenced by organic motifs and creates an elaborate metal protection ring against wind and rain.
The utility spaces are placed under the grandstands. Their perimeter walls are inclined, morphologically referring to natural sloping landscape, aiming to achieve the best possible integration of the stadium’s base in the surrounding landscape.
